Grand Lake country, flown from an hour away

The Grand Lake area is a short run west from Northwest Arkansas, and it hunts like a cross between Ozark timber and Oklahoma pasture — oak ridges and brushy hollows falling toward the water, with cattle ground in between. Deer hit on the pasture edge run for the hollow every time, and that is where the search starts.

We cover Grove, Jay, Langley, Ketchum, Vinita, Afton and Fairland, plus properties along the Elk River and Honey Creek arms. Cattle inventory work runs through the same counties, where wooded pasture makes an honest headcount from the ground almost impossible.

Oklahoma flights follow Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation rules alongside federal Part 107 requirements: recovery of animals already down, and surveys — never locating live game for a hunt. We do not cross into Kansas, where drone recovery is not permitted.
