Where the Ozarks start to stand up

South of Fayetteville the country changes. Flat pasture gives way to the Boston Mountain foothills, and a deer hit on a ridge above West Fork or Winslow can be 200 feet below you in a laurel-choked hollow you cannot see into from anywhere on foot. Thermal from overhead flattens that problem — elevation stops mattering when you are looking straight down.

North and west, the Illinois River and Clear Creek bottoms are the opposite challenge: thick, wet, tangled cover where blood disappears in wet leaves within an hour. Both are routine flights for us, and both are searches where the difference between calling at 7 p.m. and calling at midnight is often the difference between a recovery and a coyote-fed carcass.

Washington County also brings us a steady load of pet searches — dogs lost off greenway trails, out of subdivisions and away from farms on the edge of town. Those we fly year round, not just in November.
